In the mid-1940’s, when Youth for Christ was just beginning, a young man joined the movement. He was a fledgling pastor who had already attracted criticism from other church leaders for his radical ideas and outrageous preaching style. But Torrey Johnson, one of the founders of Youth for Christ, saw the potential in this young man. He mentored and encouraged him, resourced him and provided opportunity for him to preach, lead and serve. The young man’s name was Billy Graham, and because of Youth for Christ’s investment in this pioneering “world-changer”, he became one of the greatest evangelists in the history of the Church, impacting millions upon millions of people with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
In Youth for Christ today God is challenging us to once again invest in young pioneers and evangelists. And, wherever we have invested in these Godly young leaders we have seen amazing results.
Youth for Christ invested in Jose Carlos, an innovative young leader in Mexico, and over a period of just three years he established ministry in nine states in his nation and is now reaching 40,000 young people with the Good News of the Kingdom. We invested in Irene in Taiwan and she developed a virtual world that is now reaching 235,000 young people, many from mainland China as well as Taiwan, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Europe. We invested in Nancy in Central Asia and she was enabled to pioneer a ministry in an ‘unreachable’ fundamental Muslim community in one of the most inaccessible regions of the world.
