Throughout the process, the Lord continues to teach me about rest and trust. This is my story.

My son, Brayden, was a child that God gave us after years of infertility. His entrance into the world wasn t an easy one, and he had some unexplained health issues from the start. However, in many ways he was a relatively healthy child until last Fall. One morning, Brayden (3 years old, at the time) woke up covered in bruises without any injury. Being a nurse, I knew that all of the potential causes were very serious. It wasn t until I looked in his mouth and saw horrible bruising and blood blisters on his tongue and gums that I realized just how serious his condition was. I paged our pediatrician immediately. We went first into his office, and the grim look on his face when he looked into Brayden s mouth was one I will never forget. He listed off the possibilities including leukemia, and I was in tears immediately.

We were sent to our local hospital, and after a blood test, Brayden s diagnosis was clear. He was diagnosed with ITP, which is an autoimmune bleeding disorder. We were then rushed by ambulance to a children s hospital near Chicago. When we arrived, they prepared to start the treatment immediately, and as we waited, Brayden began bleeding even more. We learned that all of the bruising on his body and inside his mouth was from spontaneous bleeding, and any movement, at that time, was causing bleeding from his nose and every other opening.

Nothing can prepare a parent for seeing something like this, and I wondered if he was going to make it through the night. It was absolutely the most terrifying night of my life! Once the treatment started and the vomiting of blood stopped, Brayden finally was able to fall asleep. At that point, I fell into my husband s arms and sobbed. That night, my husband was able to sleep some, but like any mother, I stayed awake listening to the beeping on the monitors, jumping at the sound of any movement from my son, and praying for God to heal him. The treatment began to work quickly to bring his platelet levels up, but Brayden had a serious reaction to the treatment, which landed him back in the hospital for a short stay.

Doctors were confident that he would most likely recover from this completely, but that the recovery could take months and would require frequent blood tests. We knew our lives had drastically changed, and, at that time, God was making it clear to us that we needed to make some changes in our lives and our ministry. After years of being called to ministry, He seemed to be calling us out, at least for an extended time. The toll that Brayden s illness had taken on us spiritually, financially, emotionally, and physically, was such that we needed a time of rest and healing.

The long winter months went by as Brayden began to recover. His energy levels would rise and fall as his platelet counts went up and down, so we spent much of the winter inside the house resting and trying to limit our contact with the outside world in order to avoid any sickness that could make his disease worse again. As life started to settle down, I was very thankful that Brayden was doing so much better, but I began to feel sad about having to step out of ministry, and I questioned if we had really made the right decision. I still believe God s calling on our lives hasn t changed, but it seems as though we are in a holding pattern of sorts, as we wait on His timing. I am not known as being a patient person, so this is a struggle for me. As I look at the Bible as a whole, though, there are so many examples of God making promises way before those promises came to fruition-from the promise He made to Abraham to make him the father of many nations to the promise of the coming Messiah. So, clearly God must have a purpose for all this waiting.

I realized that, clearly, I have no idea what the future holds, and God began working on the issue of trust within my heart. First, I had to entrust my son to Him not knowing if Brayden would continue to struggle with his health for the rest of his life or not. Second, I had to entrust God with my future knowing that only He knows the future and what is best for me and for my husband and our family. Certainly what happened this year was not part of my plan. I came across this quote in a book called Victim of Grace by Robin Jones Gunn that helped me understand this kind of trust even more. She writes, Until we come to peace with the realization that a relationship with almighty God can happen only on His terms, not ours, we won t have an authentic relationship with Him. And, in the end, it is really our personal relationships with the Lord that matter most to Him.

I am happy to say that Brayden has continued to improve, and although I am not sure we are completely done with ITP, we have been able to go back to doing all the fun stuff a 4 year old should be doing.
