To my fellow friends and co-laborers in the YFC International family,

It’s with a heavy and saddened heart that I write to you to let you know that my friend and our colleague, Pieter Verhoeven, passed away on Saturday night from a heart attack. Even in writing this sentence it is hard for me to believe. Pieter loved, lived for, and promoted the mission of Youth for Christ in all that he did. All he wanted was for us to do the best we could so that more teens could be introduced to Christ. Selfishly, I think the world is a better place with Pieter in it. However, we trust and rely on a God who knows exceedingly more and far better than I do. As I ran my way through tears today, I imagined Pieter giving me a hard time and cracking a joke to get me smiling again.

I hurt most for Megan, Lauren and Will. When I traded messages with Megan today she simply asked for prayer. I affirmed her that many were already praying and many more would be. Please join me in this.

When I’m consumed by the grief or sorrow of our loss I’m reminded of the words of Lamentations:

“Yet this I call to mind
and therefore I have hope:
Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;
therefore I will wait for him.”
The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,
to the one who seeks him;
it is good to wait quietly
for the salvation of the Lord.”

Lamentation 3:21-26
