Manipur Mission Trip

From Vijay Thangiah, National Director
Manipur is a state in northeastern India, with the city of Imphal as its capital.

The whole idea of going to Manipur for a mission trip came up when many Manipuri young boys and girls, who came to Delhi for studies or jobs, were hooked on drugs, in live-in relationships and becoming teen parents.

The major problems facing young people in Manipur are drug trafficking (Manipur is the biggest supplier of drugs in India), drug addiction, teen parents, tribal conflicts, economic blockade and STD (Manipur is one of the leading states which have HIV positive cases).

This was wrongly influencing the other young people in Delhi. Staff decided to deal with this issue by going to the root of the problem.

Prayer was begun for the young people of Manipur and about visiting Manipur. In the meantime the Lord started two Bible clubs in two different places in Delhi for the Manipuri young people. Prayer increased as information was collected about Manipur.

After three years of prayer and planning, and waiting on the Lord, the first 10 day mission trip was held in September 2011. In spite of the challenges: city closures in different places, economic blockade ($12.50 for a gallon of gas), tribal conflicts, threats from intruders and many near death experiences, ministry was held in 6 schools, 3 hostels and two Church youth groups as well the opportunity to train and equip youth leaders.

During the second mission trip in September 2012, ministry was held in 7 schools, 6 hostels and 1 college, more than 1000 made their first time commitments and many rededicated their lives to the Lord.

The process of appointing a fulltime staff in Manipur is underway so that regular ministry can be established in January 2013 to reach out to Manipur’s needy young people.
