Ecuador has just suffered a horrific earthquake leaving thousands injured and over 250 dead and buried in the rubble – It’s estimated this number will increase.
Abner and Aimee Hernandez are YFC pioneers in Ecuador. (Abner is from Ecuador, Aimee from Canada) The Hernandez family is well and safe but they have sent the following requests and report.
The epicentre of the quake was near where Abner’s family is from. (4 hours by bus from where they currently live.) He has extended family, friends and church brothers and sisters in the area. Buildings collapsed, many have been declared unsafe, wounded people are still trapped, and dozens are still missing.
Abner and Aimee HernandezAbner has been called to Pedernales – Bahia de Caraquez region, to assist with the rescue efforts. He knows the area well as he is a trained architect. The fact that he is also bilingual is helpful because there are a number of foreign rescuers and foreigners in general that need help as this is also a tourist area.
- Strength for Aimee and Abner! Abner calculates that he will need to spend a month in the danger zone, so pray for his safety and for Aimee and their two little boys Oliver (4) and Robin (2). Living and ministering through a natural disaster is truly exhausting and even emotionally overwhelming.
- The primary physical need for the survivors is safe water. The Hernandez have stated that any donations will be used to help the victims access clean drinking water buying it, trucking it in from other cities and distributing it. Abner will give us a report soon on Relief Agencies he will be collaborating with.
- There is also a significant need for better Communications – cell phones are down; they can´t be charged or connected.
